Why Should You Study Swedish?

  1. Swedish is a Gateway to Scandinavia
Sweden is one of the most innovative, sustainable, and globally connected countries. Learning Swedish opens doors to not only Sweden but also to understanding the culture, history, and values of Scandinavia. It can be your entry point into a region known for its high quality of life, gender equality, and progressive thinking. More than 10 million people in the world speak Swedish!
  2. Career and Study Opportunities
Sweden is home to global companies like Spotify, IKEA, Ericsson, Volvo, and H&M. If you're interested in business, tech, engineering, or design, knowing Swedish gives you a competitive edge.
  3. Surprisingly Easy for English Speakers
Swedish is a Germanic language, like English. The grammar is straightforward, the vocabulary has many familiar roots, and pronunciation is manageable. If you've studied German or another Nordic language, it’ll be even easier.
  4. Cultural Access
Sweden punches above its weight in music, film, literature, and design. From ABBA to Ingmar Bergman, from “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” to modern minimalist design, knowing Swedish allows you to engage with these works in their original form and with deeper appreciation.
  5. Swedes Speak English—So Why Learn Swedish?
Yes, most Swedes speak excellent English. But learning their language shows respect, helps you build deeper connections, and sets you apart from tourists and casual visitors. It can turn a semester abroad or a work experience into something more meaningful and personal.
  6. Global Perspective and Personal Growth
Learning a smaller, less commonly taught language like Swedish can help you stand out on grad school or job applications. It shows initiative, cultural curiosity, and the ability to think beyond conventional paths.

Bottom line: Studying Swedish isn’t just about the language—it’s about stepping into a modern, global culture that’s deeply rooted in history and innovation. Whether you're thinking about careers, travel, grad school, or personal enrichment, Swedish is a smart and surprisingly accessible choice.
