Introduction by
Oksana Sachyk, Ph.D.

You are about to begin an exciting and adventurous journey into the world of the Ukrainian language.

Ukrainian is a melodic and beautiful language of a magnificent country of generous and hospitable people. It is the official language of Ukraine, a former Soviet republic, independent since 1991, with a population of almost 49 million people. Ukrainian is also widely spoken in the Ukrainian immigrant communities of Canada, the United States, Great Britain and other countries. Despite the fact that Ukraine was oppressed for many years, it has had a long and colorful history, and has retained its original and rich culture, which you will be exploring while learning the language.

Beginning Ukrainian is designed as an introductory course of the language as well as culture of the Ukrainian people. This practical course will address your needs and provide you with confidence in communicating in Ukrainian at an everyday level. Topics in these 20 lessons encompass traditional themes such as greetings, a telephone conversation, shopping, and dining out. Overall, material presented in the course covers approximately two semesters of university studies. On your journey you will meet with two individuals, a Canadian visiting Ukraine for the first time and a native Ukrainian living in the capital city of Kyiv. They will assist you on your way and answer many questions you may have. Please note that learning any language requires time, persistence and repetition. Enjoy the journey.
