When I click on the Record icon in the MaxBrowser, it doesn't record my voice.

Ensure that your sound card and drivers are correctly installed. Verify that your speakers and microphone are properly connected and turned on. Check the MS-Windows Volume control for the microphone. To do this: On the Windows Start menu, click Programs...Accessories...Entertainment...Volume Control. The Volume Control dialog appears. On the Options menu, select Properties. The Properties dialog appears. Select the Recording radio button. In the list of devices, make sure that the microphone check-box is selected. Click OK to close the Properties dialog. In the Recording Control dialog, ensure that the microphone's check-box is selected, and that the volume slider is at least at one-third of the way up. Close the Recording Control. To test, click Start...Programs...Accessories...Entertainment...Sound Recorder.

How do I type characters with diacritics for languages such as Cantonese, Portuguese, and Turkish?

Each language MaxAuthor supports has a specific keyboard mapping. To type characters with diacritics, you first press a prefix key (sometimes called a 'dead key'), then the character to be modified. You can see the keyboard map by clicking on the keyboard icon on the toolbar. For example, in Portuguese to get a 'ç', you first press the prefix key ` (the character usually found on the same key as the tilde), then you press c.

You can print the key map by:
1: pressing Alt-PrtScrn when the key map is active
2: click on Start...Programs...Accessories...Paint
3: click Edit...Paste, then Print

When I try to play a video clip, the video doesn't play properly.

Please try playing one of the videos with Windows Media Player. To do this, right click on the Start button, click Explore, then go to your CDROM drive which is probably D:, then click on the POR directory (or CHN, CAN, KOR, TUR, KAZ depending on the language), and then the 'video' directory. Double click on one of the 'AVI' files, which should play the file with Windows Media Player. If you are still seeing problems, the problem is in your computer's video setup, please see http://support.microsoft.com for possible solutions.

For Windows 95:
If you are having problems displaying the video clips, try reducing the graphics acceleration setting. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Performance tab, click Graphics, and then move the Hardware Acceleration slider to one notch from the left.
3. Click OK, and then click Close.
4. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer. See also article Q142179 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Troubleshooting .avi File Playback Problems in Windows 95.

All audio and video portions of the software seem to work fine, but when I choose text with audio, the characters all look like random pixels spread across the screen.

This is a problem on some Dell laptop computers with the display resolution set at 1280x1024 or higher. Try lowering the screen resolution to 1024x768 or lower. To do this, right click on the desktop, select Properties...Settings, then Screen area.

When I try to print a lesson, part of the text is cut off.

This may be a problem with your printer driver. See if text gets cut off when printing with any other applications (word processors, etc.). You can view your printer settings by clicking on Start...Settings...Control Panel...Printers, then right click on your printer to see the properties. Sometimes it will help to change the setting from 'standard' to 'enhanced'.

You may have an old version of the printer driver. You can usually download the latest versions of the printer drivers from the manufacturer's web site; see for example Hewlett Packard.

The automatic installation process isn't working on my computer. What should I do?

The setup program should start automatically when you put the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. If this doesn't happen, you can also start the setup program by opening the file "setup.exe" in the CD-ROM directory. If you have already installed one of our recent products, the installation will detect it and upgrade your existing files.

Note that for Windows 2000/XP/Vista, you need to be logged in as a member of the Administrator group to install the software, but you don't have to be one in order to use it thereafter. If you are not logged in as a member of the Administrator group when you try to install, you may get a seemingly unrelated message such as "Setup has detected that unInstallShield is in use. Please close unInstallShield and restart setup. Error 432".

See this for more information about installing on Windows Vista.

I installed the program, but there isn't a shortcut on my desktop. How do I start up the CD-ROM?

The CD-ROM should start automatically when put into the CD-ROM drive. If it doesn't, select Start...Programs...UofA Language Courseware...Critical Languages Series.

How do I print the footnotes?

You can print the footnotes by opening the file with MaxAuthor. Download it from http://cali.arizona.edu/docs/wmaxa. Once installed, click on Start...Programs...UofA Language Courseware...Authoring Utility. Then click on File...Open, and just open up the 'max' file you want on the CDROM. For example, D:\tur\tur01\tur01.max for Turkish Lesson1. Switch to footnote view by clicking on View...Footnote Segments, and select File...Print. We will put a footnote printing feature into future versions of the Critical Languages Series.
